WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
In his book, Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (2nd Edition, 1977), Dr. William S. Kroger writes: "The Ebers papyrus (ancient medical papers) over 3,000 years old describes how Egyptian soothsayers (i.e. oracles, seers of the future) used hypnotic procedures similar to those practiced today." Thus, hypnosis has been used for thousands of years without harm or incident. How is this possible? It's possible because of our innate ability for self-preservation ... it's the basic survival mode that every living creature has to keep safe and unharmed. Self-preservation is automatically enacted when one is in danger, either real or perceived harm, which is why there are no known cases of people being harmed by hypnosis.
Hypnosis can be used to gain control over undesired behaviors or to help you better cope with (and even alleviate) anxiety, fears and pain. Needless to say, hypnosis is a very powerful tool for healing. Hypnosis, also often referred to as hypnotherapy or hypnotic suggestion, is achieved when one is able to deeply relax and access the subconscious mind where behavioral changes can take place. This calm and pleasant state can be achieved with the help of a hypnotist who provides a safe and comfortable environment. She/ he should be well trained with key relaxation tools such as breathing and visualization techniques. Once a relaxed state is achieved, your mind is more open to positive suggestions and changes in behavior. You don't lose control or say anything. All the work is done in quiet of your mind as your body remains still and calm.
There have been many definitions of hypnosis as our understanding of it has it has evolved over the millennia. The very word "hypnosis" is misleading as comes from the Greek word “hypnos," meaning sleep, which was the common thinking of the hypnotic "state" in centuries past. In reality, one experiencing hypnosis is not asleep but in a very relaxed and focused state. In broad terms, hypnosis is a deeply relaxed, yet highly focused state where you can easily access past memories or incidents, to identify areas of challenge. Once areas are of concern are identified and understood as the root cause, they can be released and positive change can occur.
In this type of deeply relaxed, yet highly focused state you can bypass the critical, conscious mind, to focus on the subconscious. This is a critical component of hypnosis because the subconscious is where core values, beliefs, and habits are stored. People are often concerned that hypnosis is mind control. However, while in hypnosis, you are in full control of your body and especially your mind; you will only accept suggestions that are in alignment with your core beliefs. When you are deeply relaxed, and in a concentrated state offered through hypnosis, you can effectively make lasting changes to reach your goals. In this way, hypnosis is used strictly for helping and healing.
As noted, our brains and our bodies have a natural, innate capacity for self-preservation that protects us from real and even perceived harm. Thus, while in an hypnotic state if you were to perceive danger, you would immediately return to a normal, alert state. In this way, we say that all hypnosis, is self-hypnosis. That is to say, you will only accept suggestions that are pleasant and compatible with your core values, such as "imagine your self in a beautiful place in nature" or "see yourself achieving your goals". Hypnosis is a powerful tool for changing undesirable behaviors and feelings, if one truly wants lasting change.
