Visualization is critical to hypnosis, and especially self-hypnosis. In an online article from Simplypsychology.com, they describe Sigmund Freud, the famous neurologist’s , theory on the subconscious mind. They say that he used the analogy of an iceberg to describe our mind’s structure and function. They explain that Freud described the conscious mind as everything above the surface of water. Freud said this is where “all of our mental processes are that we are aware of exist” such as willpower, analysis, and decisions.
Next is the preconscious mind. It “contains thoughts and feelings that a person is not currently aware of, but which can easily be brought to consciousness. It exists just below the level of consciousness before the unconscious mind. And then we have the all-important unconscious or subconscious mind. Simplypsychology explains, “According to Freud, the unconscious mind is the primary source of human behavior. Like an iceberg, the most important part of the mind is the part you cannot see. Our feelings, motives and decisions are actually powerfully influenced by our past experiences and stored in the unconscious.” This understanding dates back to 1915 and is a longstanding explanation of the functions of the mind. In other words, the subconscious is like a giant warehouse. It stores everything you have ever seen, smelled, touched, heard, tasted, or felt…basically, all your experiences are stored in the subconscious. Your beliefs, values, identity, self-confidence, habits, emotions, and resistance to change is stored in the subconscious as well. The subconscious is also a “doer”. In fact, Freud believed that 90% of our body’s functions are subconscious. Think about that for a bit. 90%, most of what we do, is done by the subconscious without us even having to think about the action, it is done automatically. Think of the term “muscle memory”. That’s’ how you can arrive at your destination, when driving, without having to think about the process of getting there. Think about your body functions such as eating, breathing, digesting, blood, and oxygen flow… all these functions happen automatically without you having to do anything. Your body has an incredible power to heal itself. If you can get into the subconscious mind and change your thinking...you can change your life!

AuthorI am a Board Certified Hypnotist most recently trained at the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts (SWIHA). I began to study hypnosis in 2004, using HypnoBirthing, to comfortably and gently birth my first son. I went on to use hypnosis to birth my next three children using simple, yet powerful hypnosis techniques to birth each child easier and faster with little to no medical intervention. Realizing the power of hypnosis and that it really works, I certified as a HypnoBirthing teacher in 2011. I attended annual training conferences to sharpen my skills. In 2018, I studied general hypnosis to broaden the scope of my work. I love to learn and attend consistent trainings to sharpen my skills. I want everyone to know, they already have all the power within to change their lives for the better. All you have to do is learn how to unlock that power.
